culture Trinitapoli is a small town in the
South of the Capitanata area near the Ofanto river.
After some interesting findings, the Archeological
Park of Trinitapoli was built. Here you’ll visit two
hypogea named the Bronze Hypogeum and the
Ivory hypogeum that date back to the 17th century
b. C. during the Neolithic.
In the middle Ages, Trinitapoli was a place of
the transhumance. The shepherds coming from
Abruzzo arrived here during the winter to pasture
their flocks.
The shepherds started to build the first straw
houses, and renamed this place Casal de Palia,
i.e. (village of straw houses). Later the village
became bigger and bigger, so its name was
changed into Casale della Trinità (Trinity village)
because of the Trinity abbey founded by the
Benedictine monks in the surroundings.
FOOD AND WINE Mainly an agricultural
town, with its wide cultivated area, Trinitapoli and
its main dishes are based on countryside recipes
and products of excellent quality such as wine,
olive oil, vegetables, in oil preserves.
The preserves of aubergines, artichokes, dried
tomatoes in oil are the typical starters of local dishes.
EVENTI-DIVERTIMENTO The Hypogea week
takes place every October to promote the archeological heritage
of this area through organized guided tours.
You should not miss the Archeological Park of the Hypogea and
the Civic Archeological Museum.
