culture Trani, one of the three
chief towns of the BAT province, is of
big touristic interest. Since the Middle
Ages, it was considered the town of fishers,
sailors and big traders to and from the East. It
became more and more the cultural center of the
whole area. One of the most important Romanesque
cathedrals of South Italy, dedicated to Saint Nicholas the
Pilgrim, rises here in a solitary and imposing scenery
immediately close to the sea. Besides being the religious
emblem of the town, the cathedral, from her dominating
position, welcomes all the sailor arriving by sea. Just a few
steps and you’ll be in front of the Swabian castle, built in
1233, or alternatively you’ll visit the old town, which hides many
churches and palaces, as well as a Jewish district, whose two
still existent synagogues are the evidence of the presence of the
Jewish community since medieval times.
FOOD AND WINE The best-known Trani DOC product
is its muscat wine, one of the most ancient and noble Apulian
wines. It’s a sweet wine that goes well with almond sweets,
fresh fruit or some mature pecorino, as the same producers
recommend to taste it with.
EVENTI-DIVERTIMENTO The town offers
a big variety of events as, for instance, the Estate tranese, i.e.
the summer of Trani with musical, theatrical and dancing
performances in the fascinating frame of its old town, to be
precise in the surroundings of the cathedral and inside the
Swabian Castle, as well as The Dialogues of Trani, i.e. literary
meetings about current issues.
Also defined as the main town of entertainment, Trani is the
meeting place of young people at weekends, especially in the
harbour area and in the old town where there are more than
200 pubs, coffee bars, restaurants, and music clubs, all easily
accessible on foot.
