CULTURA Spinazzola is
placed on a hill of the Murgia
territory at 435 above the sea
level, on the border between
Apulia and Basilicata. The
first settlement was a Statio
Romana, a Roman station
on the Via Appia. After various
invasions of Langobards, Goths
and Saracens, Normans and Swabians
fortified the town.
Landscape offers picturesque scenery, due to the
presence of certain disused bauxite quarries.
Worth visiting are the Madre San Pietro Apostolo church that
probably dates back to the 14th century and the Templar Hospice
of the 12th century, one of the first hospices to welcome and to
give shelter to crusaders that travelled to or returned back from
Jerusalem. Traces of the medieval walls are still visible too.
FOOD AND WINE This territory’s wealth are the
subterranean springs that make the soil fertile and suitable for
the cultivation of corn and vegetables, i.e. tomatoes.
Local dishes are vegetables soup, baked bread and cime di rapa (local
vegetable) with chili pepper, liver rolls on the spit, fried cartellate with
honey or vincotto, sweets made of chickpeas, vincotto or cocoa.
EVENTS-ENTERTAINMENT Sagra degli
Antichi Sapori, the fair of ancient flavours, that takes place in
March in the old town where it’s possible to taste and buy all
local products.
