culture Margherita di Savoia
is one of the biggest salt producer and
exporter in Italy. The saltworks have
become a protected sea area because
of their worldwide recognized
environmental importance.
The history of the town is closely
linked to them. Saltworks have
always been the main economic
resource for its inhabitants.
During the Roman Empire the
town was an important centre for salt
trade with the Orient. In the 19th century
the whole area was reclaimed because
of continuous malaria diseases,
consequently the area around the coast
increased demographically.
Currently Margherita di Savoia has a very developed
shore with several bathing establishments and shops, also
thanks to the biggest thermal baths of South Italy.
Attualmente Margherita di Savoia ha sviluppato il litorale con
stabilimenti balneari, attività commerciali, grazie anche alla
presenza di un centro termale, il più grande del sud Italia per la
cura e il benessere fisico.
FOOD AND WINE Margherita di Savoia’s gastronomy
is mainly based on fresh fish.
Special dishes employ potatoes and onions of local production
which are possible to taste in the many restaurants in town and
along the coast.
EVENTS-ENTERTAINMENT Salt Art Festival in
June, is the most striking event that celebrates the symbol
of the town, the salt. The “Margherita d’Oro” Prize, in July,
was established to award a prize to prominent artists, actors,
singers, businessmen and scientists.
