CULTURA Bisceglie is a touristic
destination, but it hides a very interesting
archeological heritage. Since the Bronze
Age we have traces of the first settlement
in this area, especially in the grottoes,
where fragments of pottery and utensils for
daily use have been found. Moreover some
dolmen, interesting tombs, classified as a wide
corridor tomb with an elliptical tumulus inside are
spread its countryside. During your journey in Bisceglie
you should not miss a walk in the old town, looking for ancient
palaces, many of which dating back to the Renaissance. They are
the evidence of the artistic skills and prosperity of the past.
ENOGASTRONOMIA The town of Bisceglie started its
cultivation of cherry trees in the 16th century.
Cherries have become the symbol of the town and are still
promoted today through the activities of the farmers.
A typical sweet of the town is the “Sospiro” (i.e “the sigh”) whose
shape could remind us of a woman’s breast. This sweet is covered
with sugar icing and filled with cream or jam. It was baked first by
the nuns of the Saint Louis church, who eagerly awaited a visit of the
duchess Lucrezia Borgia, but in vain. The citizens’ disappointment
for the declined visit gave the name “sigh” to this sweet.
EVENTI-DIVERTIMENTO One cherry leads
to another, is a gastronomical weekend in June, where all
participants take part in the cherry harvest, experiencing a very
ancient local tradition. The Festival of the Mediterranean folks in
July, with music, exhibitions and folklore from the countries all
over the Mediterranean basin. It takes place in the noticeable
Mediterranean amphitheatre close to the coast.
Bisceglie is a touristic attraction because of its long shore
with beautiful beaches, a clean sea, and an always different
and captivating night “movida” also thanks to the biggest
discotheque of South Italy.
