CULTURe Andria, one of the three chief
towns of the BAT province, is well-known because of
Frederick II of Hohenstaufen’s most famous castle,
Castel del Monte, UNESCO site since 1996 because of
its architectural and symbolic particularities.
Walking through the town alleys, we discover the old
district with its Romanesque cathedral (which has just
been restored), the 14th century Ducal Palace, the three
bell towers, but also churches that are hidden in
the small alleys of the old town with its popular
architectural details (sacred tabernacles and
apotropaic masks), other palaces, which belonged to noble
families, and, in the end, you conclude your visit in a very, very
tempting museum, the “Sweet Museum”.
FOOD AND WINE Andria is mainly based on an
agricultural economy. Its products are internationally appreciated.
Its pride is the Doc extra-virgin olive oil, the final dressing for
almost all local dishes whose production is 5% of national food
requirements. To enjoy your meal you shouldn’t renounce tasting
the local mozzarella, the burrata (striped mozzarella with cream),
the orecchiette (i.e. handmade ear-shaped pasta), and the typical
sweet black olives, the onion calzone, the taralli “scaldati“ (i.e.
“warmed-up”), the baked lamb with eggs and cardoons, the
sweetmeats and tenerelli (almonds or hazelnuts covered with
chocolate) and the Christmas bakery based on almonds.
